A Real Whodunit…
The dead body copy was discovered at 8:45 am. Lying lifeless in an e-mail sent to the designer overnight.
What a pathetic waste of words. Written by the client, the copy was plugged full of platitudes and choked with bland corporate mush. In short, it reeked.
It was a sticky wicket. So, they called me — Les Overhead. Freelance copywriter, creative director, mobile ad agency. I deliver messages — direct to the head, if you get my drift.
I write and produce ads, web sites, brochures, creative direct mail, sandwich boards, refrigerator poems — anything that can carry an idea (short of a ransom note).
Portland. Yuma. Singapore. Saskatoon. I ride the online express, going wherever I'm needed. Wherever someone is hungry for a good word. Or two. Or two thousand. With revisions if needed.
It doesn't take a genius to know it's a dangerous world out there. Full of risk - as well as reward. Here are some words of advice: choose your words wisely. Always hire a professional.
History – Just the Facts
I was leaving to buy a keg when the call came in. A woman's voice asked if I was interested in working at a radio station in Whitefish, Montana. Not for the next 12 hours, I said. I showed up to work, shaven and sober, two weeks later.
In those days I was known as Tom Vandel. After a couple years punching out copy on a Smith-Corona, I turned in my keys and headed west.
Eventually pulled into Portland, where I caught on with a series of ad agencies. I got into everything: print ads, radio and TV spots, corporate brochures, client arguments ...many words were exchanged. Nobody got hurt.
One day in the shower, a hair circled the drain and it dawned on me. I should use my head and get off this merry-go-round. Go to work for myself and help those in need. That day Les Overhead was born. Freelance copywriter. Mobile ad man. A man of his word.
